August 2026 Back-to-School Organizing | Tips From Tonia

Every August, I find myself asking the same question…

Where does the time go?

This year feels especially bittersweet in our house. We’re getting our youngest son ready to head back to school while our twins are preparing for their junior year of college. Somehow, I’m shopping for school supplies and helping organize college essentials at the same time.

As parents, we spend so much of the summer looking forward to slower mornings, vacations, late nights, and making memories. Then suddenly, August arrives, and life shifts back into high gear. I loved the summer nights at the lake and pool time, and I am sure going to miss time with my girls!

Here are a few things I always do before the school year begins.

  1. Reset the Family Command Center

Whether it’s a kitchen counter, mudroom, or home office, create one central place for calendars, backpacks, permission slips, keys, chargers, and mail. Ours is the kitchen counter and our mudroom/laundry room. They aren’t far, but the flow is what matters.

When everything has a designated home, mornings become so much less stressful.

  1. Restock Everyday Essentials

Don’t wait until the first hectic Monday morning to realize you’re out of lunch bags, snacks, batteries, detergent, or printer paper.

Take inventory now so you’re starting the school year prepared instead of reacting. I start doing this the first week of August, so I am not rushing around. I use Costco.com a lot for my back-to-school shopping for lunches, snacks, and bulk purchases for the twins.

  1. Refresh Closets

Kids grow. College students come home with new clothes. Summer wardrobes change.

Spend an hour removing anything that no longer fits or is no longer being worn before adding new purchases. My goal is to get rid of one bag per child before they go back to school.

Less clutter means getting dressed becomes much easier.

  1. Create a Homework Zone

Whether your children are in elementary school or college, designate a clean, organized space where studying can happen without searching for supplies every evening.

A little preparation goes a long way toward better focus. My favorite place to shop is Office Depot for back-to-school supplies and restocking my homework area.

  1. Don’t Forget the Pantry

One of my favorite organizing projects this time of year is giving the pantry a quick reset.

Group grab-and-go snacks together, create breakfast stations, and make lunch packing simple. Your future self will thank you on those busy mornings.

  1. Make a “Launch Pad”

Shoes, backpacks, sports equipment, water bottles, and jackets all need a home.

Having everything ready the night before eliminates so much of the morning chaos. I have The Container Store Elfa System for hanging all our baseball and basketball bags. It’s visual for Lucas and easy for him to reach.

  1. Give Yourself Grace

This may be my most important tip.

As I help one child prepare for another school year and watch two others head back to college, I’m reminded that every season passes far too quickly. Makes me sad thinking about it, but the reality is, time keeps moving SO fast!

The perfectly organized house isn’t what they’ll remember. They’ll remember the late-night conversations, the road trips, the laughter around the dinner table, and knowing they always had a place to come home to.

So as your family settles back into routines this month, remember that your home doesn’t have to be perfect. It simply needs to work well enough so that you can spend less time managing your house and more time enjoying the people who live in it.

Here’s to a smooth transition, a fresh start, and making space for another wonderful school year.
