July 2026 Your To-Do List | Tips From Tonia
How to Stop Feeling Overwhelmed by Your To-Do List
I just got back from a wonderful beach trip, and one thing that really stood out to me while I was away is how nice it felt to not be tied to my to-do list. I even left my handy little white “to-do” book at home, and that was honestly the FIRST time I have ever done that on vacation!
Don’t get me wrong, I love a good list. It’s how I stay organized, keep projects moving, and make sure important things don’t fall through the cracks. But for a few days, I gave myself permission to step away from the constant reminders of what needed to be done. It was refreshing, and honestly, it reminded me why getting organized matters in the first place. Organization isn’t about doing more. It’s about creating space to enjoy life.
Now that we’re getting ready to head to our lake house for the Fourth of July, I’ve found myself right back in planning mode. But this time, my to-do list is helping me enjoy the trip instead of stressing about it.
One of my favorite tricks is creating a separate “Vacation” section on my to-do list. That way, all the little things I need to remember are captured in one place instead of floating around in my head. If you aren’t a paper person, I do recommend the “To Do” app or “Things”. All are good, just use what works for you!
My vacation list currently includes:
- Pulling out our Fourth of July decorations, see what I need to replace, or edit
- Shopping for a festive Fourth of July outfit
- Purchasing household supplies we’ll need for the week
- Planning meals and grocery items
- Making sure chargers, supplements, and other essentials are packed
By getting these tasks out of my head and onto paper, I don’t have to spend my time worrying about what I’ve forgotten.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by your own to-do list this summer, here are three simple tips:
- Prioritize What Really Matters
Not everything on your list is equally important. Identify the top three tasks that truly need your attention today. Focus there, first, and let the rest wait if needed.
- Use Time Blocking
Instead of looking at one giant list, assign specific times for specific tasks. A dedicated 30-minute block can feel much more manageable than staring at a list of twenty items. I like to do this in the morning before anyone wakes up, so I am not distracted by questions! LOL
- Delegate When Possible
You don’t have to do everything yourself. Whether it’s family members helping with vacation preparations or coworkers sharing responsibilities, asking for help can lighten the load and reduce stress.
As we celebrate Independence Day this month, maybe it’s a good time to declare a little independence from the pressure of an overwhelming to-do list. A well-organized list should support your life, not control it.
Wishing you a happy, organized, and relaxing Fourth of July!
