How to Archive Your Child’s Keepsakes Without the Clutter: Preparing a Bedroom Remodel | Tips From Tonia
One thing my clients know about me is that I’m incredibly sentimental.
I may be a professional organizer, but that doesn’t mean I don’t struggle with letting go of things that hold meaning. In fact, I probably understand it more than most. 😊
Right now, I’m in the middle of a project at my own home—preparing to remodel my daughter Sydney’s bedroom. We’re buying new furniture, fresh paint, and an updated look for the space. But before any remodeling begins, we are doing something that many families face when their children grow up: going through years of memories.
We’ve been sorting through artwork, photos, tennis memorabilia, school keepsakes, and special mementos that represent so many years of her life. For someone sentimental like me, the challenge isn’t finding things to keep. It’s deciding what truly deserves to be preserved and how to store it in a thoughtful way.
If you’re preparing for a bedroom remodel or simply trying to organize your adult child’s keepsakes, here are the exact steps we’re using in our home.
4 Steps for Archiving Your Adult Child’s Keepsakes
- Gather Everything in One Place
The first step is always the same – bring everything together.
Pull items from closets, storage bins, drawers, and shelves so you can see the full picture of what you have collected over the years. Many times, families realize they have been storing far more than they thought (myself included).
When everything is spread out in front of you, it becomes much easier to:
-
- Identify duplicates, I am even mailing some to family members if I have duplicates
- Spot items that are no longer meaningful
- Recognize the pieces that truly tell the story of your child’s life
- Create Simple Decision Categories
Instead of overthinking every item, I recommend creating a few simple categories:
-
- Keep – items that may be displayed or easily accessible
- Archive – meaningful items worth preserving long-term
- Digitize – photos, artwork, or papers that can be scanned
- Let Go – items that have served their purpose
This helps remove the emotional overwhelm and makes the decision process much more manageable.
- Digitize Paper Memories
Many of the items we hold on to, especially school papers and artwork, can be preserved digitally.
Consider scanning or photographing:
-
- Childhood artwork
- School certificates
- Special photos
- Newspaper clippings
- Programs from sports or events
Digitizing these memories allows you to preserve them without needing to store every physical item. I have a special company I use for this process, be sure to contact us for the information!
For many families, this step alone can reduce the volume of keepsakes by more than half.
- Create a Curated Memory Archive
One of my favorite strategies is what I call the “memory bin.”
Instead of storing keepsakes in multiple boxes throughout the house, create one curated archive.
This could be:
-
- A beautiful memory bin/box
- A high-quality archival box, I get mine from Archival Methods
- A labeled storage bin dedicated to your child
When space is limited, the container becomes the guide. Only the most meaningful pieces are saved, which makes the archive even more special.
Preparing for a Bedroom Remodel
Once we finished archiving Sydney’s keepsakes, the room suddenly felt lighter, and we could finally begin preparing for the remodel.
If you’re updating a bedroom in your home, here are a few tips I always recommend.
Empty the Room Completely
Before painting or bringing in new furniture, remove everything from the room. I am going to be selling her bedroom furniture on FB Marketplace and repurposing some other items.
Starting with a blank slate helps you:
- Clean thoroughly, I hired my deep cleaner to help, so I can save time
- Evaluate the layout, ours is pretty much going to stay the same because it’s a small room
- Protect existing furniture during the remodel
It also gives you the chance to rethink the space entirely.
Consider the Future of the Room
When children grow up and move into adulthood, their bedrooms often evolve. For our sake, Sydney’s room is going to stay her “adult” bedroom. Just needs some updating from the 5th grade. LOL
Many homeowners choose to create a flexible guest suite or multi-purpose space that still honors the memories made there while serving the household in a new way.
Plan the Layout Before Buying Furniture
One of the most common mistakes I see during bedroom remodels is purchasing furniture before planning the layout. I am opting to do a storage bed so I can store sheets/blankets etc.
Measure the room carefully and think through:
- Bed size and placement
- Storage needs
- Lighting
- Seating or workspace
Thoughtful planning helps the room feel both beautiful and functional.
Paint Before Furniture Arrives
Fresh paint can completely transform a room. It’s always easier to paint when the space is empty, and choosing a calming, neutral palette allows the room to feel timeless and welcoming for guests.
Incorporate Meaningful Pieces
Even though the room is being refreshed, you can still include meaningful touches.
For example:
- Frame a favorite childhood piece of art
- Display a special tennis photo or trophy
- Include a memory shelf with a few carefully chosen items
A remodel doesn’t mean erasing memories; it simply means honoring them in a more intentional way.
The Truth About Letting Go
One thing I often tell my clients (and sometimes have to remind myself) is this: Letting go of an item does not mean letting go of the memory.
When we thoughtfully archive what matters most, we create space for the next chapter while still preserving the moments that shaped our families. And in the end, that balance is what organizing is really about.
From archiving family keepsakes to preparing homes for renovation, our team helps clients simplify their spaces while preserving what matters most.
If you’re preparing for a remodel, downsizing, or simply ready for a more organized home, we would love to help. Can’t wait to share how her new room turns out! 😊
