April 2026 Closet Refresh | Tips From Tonia

I’ll be honest, I’m in the middle of purging my own closet right now, and it’s not as easy as it sounds. I’m sentimental, which means I can attach a memory, a moment, or a “what if I need this someday?” to just about anything hanging on a hanger. LOL Those who know me, know how hard this is for me!

But here’s the truth: my closet was holding way more than clothes. It was holding guilt, indecision, and a whole lot of items I don’t actually need or wear anymore. So, I decided it was time to get down and dirty and just do it. No overthinking and no more excuses.

Everything came out. And now I have two very clear piles on the floor, one to donate and one to sell. I use Clotheshorse Anonymous in Dallas, if you need a great place to take resale items. If it doesn’t fit my body, my lifestyle, or the life I’m living right now, it doesn’t get to stay.

This process reminded me that getting organized isn’t about being ruthless. It’s about being honest. And once you get past the emotional attachment, there’s something incredibly freeing about letting go and making space for what actually serves you.

If you’re ready to finally organize your closet once and for all, I’m sharing the same tips I’m using myself, because I’m right there with you.

  1. Edit before you organize
Before buying bins or hanging anything back up, take everything out. Try things on. If it doesn’t fit your body or your life right now, it doesn’t belong in your closet.
  2. Organize by lifestyle, not just category
Instead of only sorting by tops, bottoms, and dresses, group clothes by how you actually live: work, weekends, workouts, evenings out. Getting dressed is so much easier when your closet matches your routine!
  3. Use the “one-year rule”
If you haven’t worn it in a year, ask yourself why that is. If the answer is “just in case,” it’s probably time to let it go. Keep a small “maybe” section if you’re unsure, but set a deadline. I even have used a “transition” area in my closet and clients’ closets to help with the just in case section!
  4. Make your everyday items the easiest to reach
Your most-worn pieces should live front and center, at eye level. Special occasion items can move to the back. Organization should support your real life, not fight it.
  5. Stop overstuffing! Space is part of the system
A closet that’s packed too tight will never stay organized. Leave breathing room so clothes don’t get jammed, wrinkled, or forgotten about.
  6. Invest in matching hangers (yes, it matters)
Uniform hangers instantly calm visual clutter and help clothes hang properly. It’s one of the fastest ways to make a closet feel polished and intentional.
  7. Create a “reset habit,” not just a one-time clean
Once a month, do a 10-minute closet reset: rehang items, return strays, and reassess anything you didn’t wear. Consistency is what keeps you organized long-term.

This isn’t about having a perfect closet. It’s about creating a space that supports your real life. And if you’d like help creating a system that works for you, don’t hesitate to reach out to us anytime.
